Cookie, A Beating Heart, and a Few Fingers to Lick

Charlie came to her new home with "Cookie" and kept it close by during those first few days away from Layla

G-Lo and Zayde brought their cute little puppy home and began introducing her to her new surroundings. It was hard at first for the puppy be away from her mom and her brothers and sisters, but after a couple of days, she got very comfortable living in Portland with her new humans. The nighttime was the most difficult, because Charlie was used to sleeping next to her mom and siblings. G-Lo and Zayde put their puppy in a little carrying case and set it next to their bed when they when to sleep. That way, Charlie could look out the sides of the case and see that they were nearby. She slept pretty well, but sometimes she woke up and started crying. Whenever that happened, G-Lo unzipped a small part of the door of the carrying case and slipped her fingers inside. Charlie sniffed them and licked them until she fell back to sleep. Inside the case, Zayde placed a stuffed animal that looked like a momma dog and that had a little pocket on the belly. In the pocket was a tiny plastic heart with batteries. When Zayde turned it on, the heart started beating. To Charlie, it sounded like her mom's heartbeat, so she felt like she was snuggling up next to Layla. That made her happy. She also had a favorite toy that had come with her from Seattle. It was a little stuffed chocolate chip cookie. Charlie loved it so much and kept it close by (usually in her mouth!) those first few days in her new home.
