Charlie Saves the Day... Well, G-Lo's Glasses

For many days now - 16 to be exact - Charlie and her humans have spent most of the time inside their apartment. This is because of a virus that is going around. G-Lo and Zayde want to stay healthy and keep Charlie healthy, too, so they stay at home… just like all their friends are doing.

Charlie loves this situation! That’s because she’s with her humans all day long, every single day.

For example, Charlie gets to play many, many games of fetch with her humans now. Sometimes they play two or three games, but sometimes they play as many as ten! (Charlie can’t believe how lucky she is.) She and her humans go for longer walks than usual because they want to get big doses of fresh air. Charlie simply gets lots more attention and especially loves getting her hair brushed, having her belly rubbed, and playing tug of war a lot more than usual. Charlie is a very happy puppy these days.

Earlier this week, though, Charlie got bored. She had grown tired of playing with her toys, and she was having a hard time thinking of something else to do. She jumped up onto the couch, rested her head on a pillow, closed her eyes, and decided she would wait for something exciting to happen. She’d wait all day if she had to.

All of a sudden, Zayde hurried by carrying the trash. (He was on his way to the trash bin.) As he rushed by Charlie, a piece of trash accidentally fell out of the wastebasket and  - believe it or not - landed right on top of Charlie’s head! She was so startled she leapt off the couch. After she calmed down a bit, Charlie looked around for Zayde, but she did not see him anywhere. What she did see, however, was something she knew was a special treasure.

It so happened that the piece of trash that had fallen out of the wastebasket onto Charlie’s head wasn’t really trash at all. What had fallen onto Charlie’s head were G-Lo’s glasses! Earlier in the day, G-lo, who is often forgetful, had set her glasses down on the counter in the kitchen. As she was cleaning the kitchen a little later, she accidentally knocked her glasses off the counter top (she can’t see very well without her glasses), and they fell right into the wastebasket. When Zayde came to empty the trash, he hadn’t noticed the glasses sitting there among the things they had thrown into the garbage.

Do you remember that Charlie was feeling bored? That she had been waiting for something exciting to happen? Well, being able to play with G-Lo’s glasses was just the kind of excitement Charlie had been hoping for. She quickly snatched them up and scooted underneath the couch (her favorite hiding place). She began sniffing the glasses, then licking them. They smelled and tasted good. Then she began lightly nibbling on them, being careful not to break them. Charlie knew they were one of G-Lo’s most important treasures, so she did not want to hurt them in any way. But being able to have them all to herself was such fun!

Soon G-Lo realized she couldn’t find her glasses and asked Zayde if he had seen them. He shook his head. You’ve lost your glasses again?  So they started to search. They looked in the usual places: in her backpack, behind the cushions on the couch, in her coat pockets, and even in the refrigerator (Zayde had once played a trick on G-Lo and had hidden her glasses there, between the jar of raspberry jam. Can you imagine?)

They looked high and low. Charlie watched from underneath the couch. When her humans were just about to give up, Charlie took one long, last lick, and then came out from under the couch, carrying the glasses ever so carefully in her mouth.  Charlie, who rarely barks, tried to get the attention of G-Lo and Zayde by doing just that. They were surprised to hear her barking. They were also slightly annoyed. Not now, Charlie! We’ve got a big problem on our hands. G-Lo has lost her glasses, and we can’t find them anywhere! Now please be quiet so we can think about where they might be.

Charlie smiled to herself. Then she quietly walked over to her humans, carefully holding the glasses in her mouth so as not to scratch them. She nudged G-Lo’s leg. When G-Lo looked down, she couldn’t believe her eyes! She thought since she didn’t have her glasses on, she wasn’t seeing properly. Zayde, you might think I’m crazy, but, look!  I think Charlie has found my glasses! Zayde looked down. It was true.

Charlie got a delicious treat that night after dinner: a bowl of blueberries topped with whipped cream.  She was a very happy puppy. She had saved the day, well, at least G-Lo’s glasses.

Charlie is a super dog! And a very smart one. Also very cute that the glasses smelled and tasted good.
